What is Taishu horse?
The Tsushu horse is a type of horse native to Japan that has been bred mainly on Tsushima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture.
Although they are stockier than thoroughbreds, they have been helping and supporting people's lives since ancient times.
The story of the Taishu horse
Currently, eight breeds of horses are recognized as "native to Japan" (Dosanko, Kiso, Misaki, Noma, Tokara, Miyako, Yonaguni, and Taishu), and many of them are at risk of extinction.
Among them, the number of Taishu horses is particularly low, with the total number of horses, which exceeded 4,000 during the Meiji period, plummeting to just 23 by 2003.
The Taishu horses, which were bred mainly on Tsushima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture, were used for farming and transporting timber and daily necessities in the mountainous terrain, making them an essential part of people's lives.
However, due to factors such as a decline in the agricultural population and the spread of automobiles, the number of farmers has continued to decline as mentioned above.
The future of Taishu horses
Despite their small size, the Taishu horses are strong and docile, and have supported the lives of people up until now.
I feel that in the future, their gentleness and cuteness have great potential to support people's hearts as well.
Even as times change, the Taishu horses remain close to people. There are currently just under 50 of these horses left on Tsushima.
We will continue to do what we can to preserve this precious species.
A new way of living with the Taishu horses
The Taishu horse's small size makes it easy for children and women to ride, making for a fun horse riding experience.
We also accept facility visits. Interacting with their gentle personalities can have a therapeutic effect on your mind.
Aiming to create new ways of living with the adorable Taishu horses,
seeing them not just as companions in life but as companions in heart,
The Taishu Horse Preservation Society is also putting effort into breeding activities that are conscious of bloodlines, such as opening a breeding pasture.
